제니퍼 청 로(Jennifer Cheng Lo)는 홍콩 기반 초기투자 전문 벤처캐피털(VC)인 뉴시크캐피털(NewChic Capital)의 공동 창업자이자 회장이다. 뉴시크캐피털은 시리즈C 단계 이하 초기 스타트업에 투자하고 있다. 주요 투자 분야는 뷰티, 패션, 사회적기업 등이다. 북미와 아시아 지역에 투자를 집중한다.제니퍼는 패밀리 오피스인 콘텐츠 커머스 플랫폼 기업 젠클럽의 창업자이기도 하다. 또 여성 주도 헤지펀드사인 에이스인베스트먼트매니지먼트의 창업 멤버다. 또 뷰티, 패션 분야 등 다양한 스타트업의 창업 멤버이기도 한데, 스타트업 생태계를 잘 아는 연쇄 창업가라는 평가다.
그는 미국에서 태어나고 자랐다. 뉴욕에서는 배우와 모델로 활동하기도 했다. 보스턴대 부속 고등학교와 브루클린 고등학교에서 학창시절을 보냈고, 뉴잉글랜드 콩세르바투아르의 예비대학 프로그램에서 피아노를 전공하는 등 '팔방미인'의 면모를 갖췄다는 평가를 받는다. 또 브라운대에선 국제관계학을 전공했고, 이후 홍콩과학기술공대에서 경영전문대학원 과정을 밟았다.
스타트업계에서 나온 뒤 그는 창업가들을 위한 투자자와 멘토로서의 활동을 시작했다. 연설자와 칼럼니스트로도 잘 알려져 있는데, BBC나 CNBC와 같은 방송사뿐만 아니라 각종 잡지, 테드(TED) 등에서도 말솜씨를 뽐낸 바 있다. 홍콩 지역 대학교들에서 강연도 다니고 있다.
다음은 그와의 일문일답.
▶반갑다. NewChic Capital Family Office를 설립하기까지의 여정에 대해 소개해달라.

▶현재 하고 있는 사업에 대한 소개와 사업 아이디어를 얻게 된 배경을 소개해달라.

우리는 "우리 아이들이 물려받기를 원하는 세상을 만들고 있다"는 만트라를 준수하기 위해 투자하고 있으며, NewChic은 암 백신 및 기타 장수 중심 의약품으로 Cambrian Bio와 같은 건강 치료제에서 많은 임팩트 중심 투자를 하고 있습니다. 독점적인 알고리즘 Spectra를 사용해 기후에 중점을 둔 Climate-X에, 우리가 먹고, 살고, 일하고, 노는 방식에 이르기까지 사람들이 일하는 방식에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤습니다. 우리는 때때로 초기 투자에 대한 후속 조치로 C를 통해 Pre-seed에 투자했습니다.
▶초기 투자 단계에서의 체크리스트는 무엇인가.

▶팬데믹 이후 어떤 업종이 유망하다고 보는가.
저는 '웹3'와 탈중앙화, 금융 통합에 관심이 많습니다. 팬데믹 이후 이런 변화들은 '뉴노멀'로 받아들여질 수밖에 없습니다. 나는 인간의 기본적인 욕구가 반영된 '임팩트 테크'와 기후기술 기업, ESG 기업, 프롭테크, 푸드테크, 에드테크, 핀테크 등이 계속해서 강세를 이어갈 것으로 보고 있습니다.
▶포트폴리오 회사들을 소개해달라.
제 친구가 운영 중인 핀테크 회사 런웨이, 사람들의 행동 양식을 분석해 기후 위기를 해결하려는 클라이밋X(이 회사는 최근 시드 라운드를 마무리했는데 오버부킹에 성공했습니다), 인공지능(AI) 기반 뷰티테크인 헬로아바, 크리에이터 커뮤니티 서비스를 내놓은 플레이그라운드, 데이터 마케팅 회사 보티, 반려동물 메타버스 플랫폼 페타스틱 등이 있습니다. 모든 포트폴리오사들은 웹3 기반 플랫폼을 갖고 있거나, 웹2에서 웹3로 나아가는 단계에 있습니다.
▶자선단체 활동도 열심히 하는 것 같다.
저는 여성과 어린이들에게 힘을 실어주는 모든 자선단체에 열정적입니다. 여성은 많은 역할을 맡았고 저는 할머니와 어머니가 얼마나 기업가적이고 강한지 직접 겪었습니다. 저는 피아노를 '초능력'으로 사용해 자선 콘서트를 하고 격리 또는 회복에 갇힌 사람들에게 가상 콘서트를 제공하거나 소셜 미디어를 통해 영감을 주고 있습니다.
▶기생충이나 오징어게임을 봤나. 최근 한국 콘텐츠들은 영향력이 강해 보인다. 한국에 투자할 생각은 있나.
요즘 한국 콘텐츠는 전 세계적으로 엄청난 힘을 발휘하고 있습니다. 저는 Parasite와 Squid Games에 대해 익히 들었지만 불행히도 에피소드를 직접 보기에는 너무 무서웠습니다(웃음). 사실 한국 여성 크리에이터 집시(Zipcy)가 일찌감치 응원한 NFT가 있었습니다. 그들은 OpenSea에서 1억 이상의 매출을 올렸습니다. K-wave와 관련된 좋은 사업이나 투자 기회가 있다면 얼마든지 관심이 있습니다.
▶NewChic Capital Family Office의 비전은 무엇인가.
NewChic은 영향력 있는 기술, 웹3, 커뮤니티, Metaverse, 과소평가된 Founders 및 Funders 등과 계속 협력하고 투자할 겁니다. 그동안 우리는 MicroVC 펀드와 헤지 펀드를 출시했습니다. 콘텐츠, 커뮤니티, 큐레이션, 협업, NFT는 빙산의 일각입니다. 그것들은 예술, 문화, 인간성, 기술의 정점일 뿐만 아니라 최고의 메타버스가 최고의 커뮤니티에 의해 강조되는 점점 더 탈중앙화되는 세계에서 지분과 소유권의 증거가 될 것입니다. 우리를 인간으로 만드는 요소인 사랑과 공감으로 프로젝트를 계속 구축하고 파트너 관계를 맺을 것입니다. 웹3는 문화 르네상스입니다.
▶가장 좋아하는 책과 그 이유는.
좋아하는 책은 셀 수 없을 정도로 많습니다. 그러나 아주 어린 나이에 읽었던 <안네 프랑크의 일기>라는 책이 매우 가슴 아팠고 한 소녀의 이야기, 천진함으로 기억하고 있습니다. 소녀와 그녀의 나이를 훨씬 넘어선 시대의 지혜, 비극적으로 제2차 세계 대전 중 독재자의 행동까지, 사실 현재 시대 상황과 유사점을 찾는 것은 어렵지 않습니다.
▶스타트업 생태계에서 가장 바꾸고 싶은 게 있다면.
스타트업 생태계에서 엑시트에 성공했을 때 다른 사람들을 돕는 것은 매우 중요합니다. 저는 시간과 자원을 받는 사람이 아니라 먼저 손을 내미는 사람에게 투자하는 것을 좋아합니다. 성공적인 기업가가 되려면 투자자도 필요하고 그 반대도 마찬가지임을 이해하고 항상 운영자처럼 생각하고, 말하는 사람이 아니라 행동하는 사람이 돼야 합니다. 사람들이 무엇보다도 관계를 우선시하고 우정, 사람을 다른 무엇보다 우선시한다는 것을 기억하는 것도 중요합니다. 저는 개인적인 친구를 매우 비즈니스적인 방식으로 대하려고 노력하고 비즈니스 친구를 매우 개인적으로 대하려고 노력합니다.
▶기업가에게 어떤 말을 듣는 것을 싫어하나.
저는 기업가들이 "모든 것은 아이디어와 피치에 관한 것"이라는 말을 하는 것을 싫어합니다. 그것은 아이디어에 관한 게 아닙니다. 누구나 좋은 아이디어를 가질 수 있고, 누구나 잘 던지도록 코칭할 수 있습니다. 그것은 후속 조치, 인내, 전반적인 비전과 사명에 관한 것만큼이나 빠르게 회전하고 반복하거나 적어도 끊임없이 변화하는 패러다임 속에서 진화하는 능력에 관한 것입니다.

▶현재 자신과 돈의 관계를 어떻게 평가하는가. 시간이 지나면서 무엇이 달라졌나.
가족, 건강, 시간이라는 진정한 자산에 비하면 돈이 하찮게 느껴집니다. 저는 거의 10년 전에 이것에 대해 TedX에서 강연을 했고 그것이 여전히 유효하다고 생각합니다. 시간은 아무도 갖고 있지 않은 하나의 통화입니다. 가족과 사랑하는 사람과 충분한 시간을 보낼 수는 없으며 건강은 건강이 사라질 때까지 우리 모두가 당연하게 여기는 것입니다. 친구와 가족도 마찬가지입니다. 그것들이 사라질 때까지 그것들을 당연하게 여기지 마십시오.
▶지금껏 만난 사람 중 가장 멋진 사람은 누구이고 이유는 무엇인가.
제가 만난 가장 멋진 사람은 가장 친한 친구 Vivian입니다. 그녀는 가족을 꾸릴 때까지 항상 제 옆에 있었습니다. 약 10년 전 경영대학원에서 그녀를 만났고, 일 주일 후에 남편을 만났습니다. 그녀는 제 세 자녀의 대모입니다.

1. How many hats are you wearing now? Tell us about your journey to founding NewChic Capital Family Office.
I’m wearing a ton of hats. I’m a Creator, Entrepreneur, Investor, and community builder and champion for underestimated founders and funders and impactful projects for humanity. I started out actually as a Creator because true to my Chinese name which literally means “literature” and “music”. I was a child prodigy at piano, learning from the reknowned Jean Stackhouse and Julia Bernstein at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. I was winning different international competitions from the age of 10 onwards and when I was a young teenager became the youngest student of the famed concert pianist the late Anthony di Bonaventura who was head of the music department at Boston University. I was also a youth writer and won a national poetry competition then too. I started acting and modeling while I was young, but also continued it on the side during high school, college and for a few years after I graduated. During the pandemic, I recently resumed being an actress to do shooting and filming and promotions for some of my portfolio companies and projects. I also restarted my career as a pianist and won an international competition, in order to motivate my 3 children and be a role model for them in their music and artistic pursuits. It’s been nice to have this time to revisit various passions.
It was while performing and pursuing creative outlets since I was young, that I discovered I had natural entrepreneurial ability and worked at and did startups with my brother and others while in college and also after graduating. I was further able to develop as an entrepreneur, and a builder in tech as I held management roles in technology companies and startups during and after business school which I did at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. After some startup exits, I decided to start my family office NewChic Capital for investing in female and diverse founders, funds, and pursuing and building other impactful passion projects that help move the needle. Aside from NewChic Capital, I’ve started a community called JennClub and also alongside my partner Vivian Wang, am in the process of launching publicly a private fund, Ace Investment Management (AIM / Ace Hedge Fund ) ; at a later date will be unveiling a micro VC with her and our other partner Lauren Nham with occasional opportunities showing up in my JennFund syndicate on Angellist.
2. Tell us about your family business and how did you come up with an idea to start NewChic Capital Family Office?
My parents’ focus when I was growing up was on technology companies and also on real estate, and I realized early on the importance of entrepreneurship, investing, as well as diversifying into both physical and virtual (digital) assets. My father and my mother recorded so many hours of my piano and acting videos growing up as he said these would be my memories and future generations memories. Little did I know that the first NFT I ever minted later would be of me playing the piano, which was an NFT I made for Jin Yu and his loved ones while he was in the ICU and then passed away from Covid.
After being involved with startups that exited, I realized the future going forward was investing in other entrepreneurs, funders, changemakers, and community builders. That’s what I’ve done and what I continue to do. NewChic is a play on the words “New Girl” - I’d always been the new girl at school when we moved to different cities in the US when I was growing up, and I was the new girl when I moved to Hong Kong for business school and stayed to become an entrepreneur, investor, creator, and community builder in my own right. As mentioned my main partners are women as well, Vivian Wang and Lauren Nham.
3. Please tell us about investment thesis, e.g. strategy, sectors, focus geographic market, ticket size and stage, / social impact, etc.
In terms of Investment Thesis we invest try to abide by the mantra that “we are building the world we want our children to inherit”, and NewChic has many impact focused investments from health therapeutics like Cambrian Bio with cancer vaccines and other longevity-focused medicines, to Climate-X which is focused on climate with their proprietary algorithm Spectra. that have positively impacted the way people work ranging from how we eat, live, work, play. We’ve invested in Pre-seed through C, sometimes as follow ons on our early investments.
4. What do you look for in early-stage investment? what do you have on your checklist?
We look for an alignment of values and vision when it comes to early stage Founders and it all comes down to the team, their ability to execute, as well as their track record. By track record, we don’t necessarily mean exits or multiple exits (although that is nice). We look at the team and the founders’ track record as people - are they good people? Do they have a track record of creating value for and helping others?
5. Which verticals or which businesses do you think will experience explosive growth in the next couple of years post pandemic?
I continue to believe in Web 3 and the power of decentralization, DAO for governance and financial inclusion for all as we are empowered to utilize our own data and actions, alongside the growth of a Creator economy and a more ecosystem. Throughout the pandemic and post pandemic (whenever that is) and this new Normal we are all forced to accept, I still believe that basic human needs will stand strong including Impact Tech (we are all stakeholders in our collective future and the world), Climate Tech, ESG Tech, Property Tech, FoodTech, Edtech (we need to continuously learn and grow as does our NexGen), Fintech, WealthTech.
6. Please tell us a bit about a couple of your current portfolio companies you are bullish about and why you made investment in them and are advising them.
Runway is a company we are extremely excited about as it’s led by my friend Siqi Chen (formerly Zynga, Postmates (Uber), Sandbox AR) who is a an entrepreneur and investor hybrid like me, not to mention backed multiple times by the likes of Andreesen Horowitz, and an amazing Advisor/Venture Partner on our Investment Committee. ClimateX is a Climate change company at the forefront of bringing actionable data to people, organizations, communities everywhere as we are all collectively impacted by climate change and the repercussions of not taking action now and recently closed their oversubscribed Seed (We invested in the Pre-Seed and Seed rounds). HelloAva is our beauty and wellness AI portfolio disrupting the way consumers interact with their beauty and wellness products. PlayGround is a Creator Multiverse that is empowering the way creators and communities interact and change the world together. Votee is a company empowering consumers to monetize their data into actionable insights by brands and organizations. Petastic is a pet metaverse helping us take care of our pet children utilizing blockchain, token, and NFT technology. All of our companies are Web 3 or bridging the gap from Web 2 to Web 3.
7. I saw you are very active in philanthropic activities. What else do you do besides investment activities. anything you are passionate about?
I am passionate about any charity that empower women and children. Women hold so many roles and I watched firsthand how entrepreneurial and strong my grandmothers and mother were and are. I’ve played charity concerts using my piano as my “superpower” and I’ve been giving virtual concerts to those stuck in quarantine or recovering, or to inspire them, as well via social media.
8. Did you watch Parasite and Squid game?
Korean contents are huge phenomenon around the world these days. Do you see any good business or investment opportunity related to K wave? I’ve read about both Parasite and Squid Games but am unfortunately too scared to watch the episodes myself although my friends and family have. There was actually an NFT by a Korea female woman creator named Zipcy who I supported early on. They did over 100 million in sales on OpenSea. I’m a proud Zipcy holder. 9. What is your big picture, next 5 years for you and vision for NewChic Capital Family Office and your other businesses.
Let me flesh this out further in the future, but NewChic is going to continue to collaborate with and invest in impactful technology, Web 3, communities, Metaverse, and underestimated Founders and Funders, and more. In the meantime we will be also launching our MicroVC Fund as well as our Hedge Fund, and building out content and community platforms to be interoperable into this open collective future which will come down to content (substance), community, curation, collaboration, and much more. NFTs are the tip of the iceberg. They are the culmination of Art, Culture, Humanity, Technology but also they will be proofs of stake and ownership in an increasingly decentralized world where the best metaverses are underscored by the best communities. We will continue to build and partner with projects with love and empathy as that is the ethos that makes us human. Web 3 is a cultural renaissance as much as it is a reawakening; it is everyone currently alive right now who are truly immortalized onto the blockchain.
10. What is your favorite book and why?
I have too many favorite books to count. However, at this moment I am remembering a book I read at a very young age called “The Diary of Anne Frank” as it’s very poignant and tells the story of a girl on the cusp of womanhood, speaking with the voice and innocence of a girl and the wisdom of an age far beyond her years, tragically snuffed short by the acts of a despot during World War II. It’s not hard to see the parallels to the current world situation. For a happier series from my childhood, I enjoyed reading the entire “Anne of Green Gables” series about a girl coming of age and reaching full womanhood in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
11. What are the things you want to change most in start-up ecosystem?
In the start up ecosystem, I wish to see more of the pay it forward mentality. It’s tempting to be heads-down on your own startup, but it’s still important to reach out a hand and help others and also, when you have that exit, or even a slight bit of success, to pay it forward and help others. I like to invest my time and resources in others who have their hand out first to help, not take. It’s important to understand that in order to be a successful entrepreneur, you also need to be an investor, and vice versa, and to always think like an operator and be a doer, not a talker. It’s also important for people to remember to put the relationship first above all else, and to prioritize friendships and relationships and people over anything else. I try to treat my personal friends in a very businesslike way, and I try to treat my business friends very personally.
12. What advice do you hear most commonly that is given to entrepreneurs you disagree with. And why?
I hate hearing entrepreneurs being told that it’s all about the idea and the pitch. It’s not about the idea; Anyone can have a good idea, and anyone can be coached to pitch well. It is about the follow through, the perseverance, and the overall vision and mission, as much as it is about the ability to pivot and iterate quickly, or at least evolve amidst ever-changing paradigms.
13. How do you evaluate your own relationship to money today? How has it changed over time?
I feel like money pales in comparison to the true assets which are family, health, and time. I gave a TedX talk on this almost a decade ago and I think it still holds true. Time is the one currency that no one has enough of. One can never spend enough time on family and loved ones, and health is something we all take for granted until it’s gone. Same for your friends and family. Do not take them for granted until they’re gone.
14. Who is the nicest person you have ever met? And Why? (except for your family)
The nicest person I’ve ever met is my best friend Vivian. She has always been there for me to the point of becoming family. I met her in business school about 10 years back and then I met my husband a week later. She was my maid of honor at my wedding, and she’s now the godmother of my 3 children.
