스톡홀름 주니어 워터 프라이즈[https://www.siwi.org/prizes/stockholmjuniorwaterprize/ ]는 15~20세 학생들이 주요 물 문제에 대한 해결책을 제시하는 국제 대회다.
마쓰하시 히로키와 미야키 다쿠마는 일본의 전통적인 토양 다지기 기술인 '다타키(Tataki)'를 이용해 토사 유출을 제어하고, 식량의 생산량을 늘리는 방법을 개발했다.
두 학생은 프로젝트 발표 영상에서 "이 시스템은 오직 저렴한 천연 재료로만 사용하기 때문에 비용이 적게 들고 환경친화적"이라며 "이 시스템을 세계로 전파해 물과 식량 문제를 해결했으면 한다"라고 말했다.
심사위원단은 "올해 수상자는 단순한 지역적 해결책이 국제적인 맥락에서 물 문제를 해결할 수 있다는 사실을 증명했다"라며 "대회 참가자들은 체계적인 연구를 통해 물 보존과 토양 관리 성취도를 높일 방법을 개발했다. 또한, 과학 지식과 실험을 효과적으로 결합해 건조한 지역에서 물을 모으고, 사용하며, 보존하는 방식에 일대 혁명을 불러일으켰다"고 언급했다.
스톡홀름 주니어 워터 프라이즈의 공식 후원자인 스웨덴 빅토리아 왕세녀가 수상자를 발표하고, 모든 결선 진출자들에게 큰 감탄을 보냈다.
미국의 Zoe Gotthold는 해양 생태계에 기름 오염이 미치는 영향을 제한하는 창의적인 접근법으로 우수상(Diploma of Excellence)을 받았다. 그녀는 누출된 기름과 해수 사이에 형성되는 유화액을 추출함으로써 촉망되는 해결책을 발견했다. 심사위원단은 "우수한 지식과 끈기를 보였다"고 평가했다.
올해는 대중이 People's Choice Award에 투표할 수 있다. 방글라데시의 Adittya Kumar Chowdhury와 Khaled Iftekhar가 수상자로 선정됐다. 이들은 천연 폴리글루탐산과 모링가 올레이페라(Moringa oleifera) 씨로 저비용 정수법을 개발했다.

Japanese team wins Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2020
STOCKHOLM, Aug. 25, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Hiroki Matsuhashi and Takuma Miyaki from Japan receive the prestigious 2020 Stockholm Junior Water Prize for their innovation to prevent soil erosion. HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden announced the winners during an online award ceremony as part of World Water Week At Home [http://www.worldwaterweek.org/ ] on 25 August.
Stockholm Junior Water Prize [https://www.siwi.org/prizes/stockholmjuniorwaterprize/ ] is an international competition where students between 15 and 20 present solutions to major water challenges.
Hiroki Matsuhashi and Takuma Miyaki have developed a method to control soil runoff and increase food production, using the traditional Japanese soil solidification technology Tataki.
"This system is made of only inexpensive natural materials, so it is cheap and eco-friendly. We would like to spread this system to the world and solve water and food problems," the duo said in a filmed presentation of their project.
The Jury noted that: "This year's winners have proven that simple local solutions can solve water problems in a global context. Through systematic studies the contestants have developed methods to make water conservation and soil management more achievable. The contestants effectively combined scientific knowledge and experimentation to revolutionize the way water is collected, used, and conserved for agriculture in arid regions."
The winners were announced by HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the Prize's Official Patron, who expressed great admiration for all the finalists.
A Diploma of Excellence was awarded to Zoe Gotthold, USA, for a creative approach to limiting the impact of oil pollution in marine ecosystems. By isolating the emulsion that forms between spilled oil and seawater she had found a promising solution and "demonstrated extraordinary knowledge and perseverance", according to the Jury.
This year, the public could also vote in the People's Choice Award, which went to Adittya Kumar Chowdhury and Khaled Iftekhar from Bangladesh. They have developed a low-cost method to purify water with naturally derived poly glutamic acid and Moringa oleifera seeds.
Stockholm Junior Water Prize has been organized every year since 1997 by Stockholm International Water Institute, SIWI, with Xylem as Founding Partner. This year everything was however online, due to Covid-19. "I am humbled by the fact that many of these projects were developed under the most challenging of circumstances," said Ania Andersch, manager for Stockholm Junior Water Prize at SIWI.
