제주 유일의 전 과정 IB 국제학교인 브랭섬홀 아시아(Branksome Hall Asia)가 ‘인터내셔널스쿨 어워즈 2021(The International School Awards 2021)’에서 최고 상인 ‘올해의 국제학교 상(The International School of the Year Award)’ 주인공으로 최종 선정되었다고 밝혔다. 전 세계 국제학교의 시장정보 및 데이터 제공 업계의 선두 기관인 ISC 리서치(ISC Research)는 영국 현지 시간으로 어제 오전 10시에 공식 시상식을 개최, 총 12개 부문 수상 학교와 더불어 올해 최고의 우승 학교를 이와 같이 발표했다.인터내셔널 스쿨 어워즈는 전 세계 명망있는 국제학교에서 펼치고 있는 학습, 교육, 지역사회, 복지, 리더십, 전략적인 운영 등, 다양한 부분에 걸친 노력과 활동을 축하하는 자리로서, 국제학교 간에 그 모범사례들을 공유하고 이를 독려하는 행사이다. 특히 이번 어워즈 교육 전문 평가단은 글로벌 위기를 불러 온 코로나19 상황에 맞서 교육환경의 혁신성과 다양성을 바탕으로 변화의 잠재력을 두드러지게 보여준 노력과 성과들을 평가하여 우수 교육 기관들을 가렸다고 밝혔다.
2021 어워즈에는 유·초등부터 고등과정까지 영어로 교과과정을 제공하는 전세계 62개국 264개교의 국제학교들이 참여하였으며, 복지, 커뮤니티, 환경 및 국제적인 영향력, 전략적 운영, 학생 안전 지도 및 보호, 미래전략적 사고력 양성, 대학 진로 등을 포함하는 12개 분야별 우수 교육 기관 자리를 두고 치열한 경합을 벌였다. 이 중 브랭섬홀 아시아는 「전략적인 리더십 교육기관(Strategic Leadership Initiative)」과 「지역사회 기여 교육기관(Community Initiative)」 부문에서 우승 후보자로 지난 11월에 선정된 바 있으며, 이번 시상식을 통해 지역사회 기여 교육기관으로 최종 선정 발표되었고 이에 더 나아가 ‘올해의 최고 국제학교’라는 영예를 거머쥔 것이다.
브랭섬홀 아시아는 학생들이 주도적으로 결성한 ‘패러다임 클럽(Paradigm Club)’이라는 봉사 단체를 통해 여성 인권이 낮은 네팔의 여아들을 위한 안전장치를 창의적으로 개발, 이를 제작하고 실제로 기부하기 위한 지원금을 마련하는 등의 과정에서 여러 관련 단체들과 협업하고 이를 성공적으로 이끈 노력들을 크게 인정받았다. 이 봉사단체의 활동은 현재에도 지속적으로 운영되고 있으며 최근에는 참여 학생들이 마이크로 그린하우스(Micro Greenhouse)를 직접 제작하여 지역 사회에 기부하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 브랭섬홀 아시아는 전략적인 학교 운영 부분에서도 후한 점수를 받았다. 전교를 아우르는 혁신적인 디지털 테크놀로지 기반의 온라인 교육 프로그램 운영 및 리서치를 통한 지속적인 개선, 교사들의 테크놀로지 사용 능력 향상을 위한 학교의 아낌없는 지원, 그리고 국제 교육시장에서의 활발한 노하우 공유 등의 활동 성과를 인정 받은 것.
브랭섬홀 아시아를 올해의 세계 최고 국제학교로 선정한 ISC Research의 심사위원단은 “더 나은 세상을 만들어나갈 리더들을 육성하는 학교의 훌륭한 신념 하에 정교하게 기획되고 운영된 학교의 노력과 활동이 결과적으로 브랭섬홀 아시아 학생들은 물론 세상에 실질적인 변화를 불러일으키고 있다”고 평했다.
브랭섬홀 아시아의 총교장 신디 럭(Dr. Cinde Lock) 박사는 “올해의 최고 국제학교 상은 본교에 있어 매우 큰 의미를 지닌다. 특히 브랭섬홀 아시아가 추구하는 주요 가치, 즉 학생들의 배움에 대한 열의와 혁신적인 사고력을 기반으로 지역사회를 포함한 현실 세계의 문제에 학생들이 직접적으로 참여하도록 독려하며 더 나은 세상을 만드는 리더들을 육성한다는 학교의 미션과 이를 이행한 성과들을 대외적으로 인정받은 것이기 때문이다”고 전하며, “앞으로도 브랭섬홀 아시아는 우리의 어린 학습자들이 미래의 리더로서 진정한 변화를 이끌어 나갈 수 있도록 교육하는데 힘을 아끼지 않을 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

Branksome Hall Asia, the only all-IB school on Jeju Island and the only IB continuum school for girls in Asia, announced that it has been named the International School of the Year at the International Schools Award 2021 that was hosted by ISC Research. It was also announced that Branksome Hall Asia won a second award for achievements earned within the category of ‘Community Initiative.’ ISC Research is the leading provider of English-medium K-12 international school data, trends and intelligence, and the awards ceremony was held on Monday, January 18th, at 10:00 UTC.
Branksome Hall Asia was shortlisted for awards within two categories that included ‘Community Initiative’ and ‘Strategic Leadership.’ Schools that are nominated for an award are considered for the International School of the Year award. The Community Initiative award for 2021 was achieved in connection of a student-led initiative which resulted in the design and production of security necklaces for girls in vulnerable situations in Nepal. Specifically, Branksome Hall Asia’s IB Diploma students were recognized for their community initiative for their work creating the Paradigm Club to solve social problems through the use of technology innovation. In collaboration with the NGO, Life World (or Life Nuri), the Paradigm Club proposed a disaster research project for the victims of the Nepal earthquake. The students designed and produced a solar powered security necklace equipped with a flashlight, alarm, and tracking chip for vulnerable young women. The next generation of Paradigm is still going strong.
It is also important to note that the school won in the category of ‘Initiative to support students as future-thinking innovators’ during the 2020 awards competition.
The annual International School Awards competition recognizes outstanding initiatives that are delivered in international schools around the world. Currently, 12,080 international schools are involved in teaching over 6.7 million children aged from 3 to 18.
More than 260 international schools from 62 countries competed in the International School Awards this year across 12 categories that recognize international schools for initiatives that support inclusion, students as future-thinking innovators, digital technology in learning, ethical values in education and more. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the ISC Research judges paid particular attention to initiatives that ‘showed innovation and potential for change through adversity.’
The judging panel of the International School Awards 2021 stated that, “Branksome Hall Asia has demonstrated well planned initiatives that have excellent intentions and truly impressive development which, as a result, are making a real impact for students and others.”
Dr. Cinde Lock, Principle of Branksome Hall Asia remarked, “It is an absolute honor to receive such a prestigious international award. The award is a recognition of the hard work of our faculty and staff, and excellent education Branksome Hall Asia offers, and it is a great reflection of our values with a focus on student vigor, innovation, encouraging our youth of today to engage in community initiatives to shape a better world.” She added, “We will continue to provide an excellent learning environment and experience for our students and to make a difference in the world.”
Since the school opened its campus in 2012 on the island of Jeju in South Korea, Branksome Hall Asia has grown to become a prestigious and respected school. It is the only sister school of Branksome Hall Canada, which possesses a 118 year tradition of educational excellence. As a continuum IB school, teaching staff facilitate students’ problem-solving and critical-thinking skills as globally minded learners. About 95 percent of the school’s graduates have been offered admission to colleges on the list of the world’s top 100 universities as selected by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Further, about 66 percent of the 2020 graduates were offered university scholarships and this result has been facilitated by the fact that Branksome Hall Asia enjoys one of the highest IB average scores globally.
