John Cherry 박사는 지하수 오염 위험에 관한 주요 권위자이자, 오염물질 수문지질학(contaminant hydrogeology)이라는 학문 분야를 창시한 인물이다. 오염물질 수문지질학은 화학물질과 폐기물의 침출에 대해 연구한다. 지질 엔지니어 교육을 받은 그는 협력 수준이 높은 현장 연구와 더불어 오염된 지하수를 모니터링, 관리 및 정화하는 새롭게 체계적인 접근법을 개척했다. 덕분에 오염물질의 이동 과정에 대한 예리한 통찰이 확보되고, 세계 인구 중 거의 절반에 식수를 공급하는 지하수를 더 쉽게 보호할 수 있게 됐다.

스톡홀름 워터 프라이즈 심사위원단은 표창장에서 "John Cherry 박사는 스톡홀름 워터 프라이즈를 수상함으로써 과학, 교육 및 실천에 대한 그의 기여를 인정받게 됐다. 또한, 인간 생활에서 가장 필수적이지만 동시에 가장 위태로운 자원인 물을 보호하기 위해 각국 정부가 마련해야 하는 현재와 미래의 정책, 법규 및 집단적인 숙고에 정보를 제공하고자 충분히 자격 있는 자신의 지위를 이용해 지하수 학문에 대한 열정적이고 매우 효과적인 옹호를 한 성과도 인정받았다"라고 언급했다.
스톡홀름 국제 물 연구소(Stockholm International Water Institute, SIWI)의 소장 토그니 홀름그랜(Torgny Holmgren)은 "Cherry 박사는 세계적으로 위협받는 지하수를 보호할 방법을 이해하는 데 지대한 공을 세웠다"고 언급했다.
Cherry 박사는 캐나다 궬프대학교의 부교수이며, 궬프대학교의 현장 집중적인 지하수 연구 컨소시엄 소장이다. 또한, G360 지하수 연구소의 부소장이다.

Groundwater Expert, Dr John Cherry, Wins 2020 Stockholm Water Prize
STOCKHOLM, March 23, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr John Cherry receives the Stockholm Water Prize 2020 for discoveries that have revolutionized our understanding of groundwater vulnerability. His research has raised awareness of how groundwater contamination is growing across the world and has led to new, more efficient methods to tackle the problem.
Dr John Cherry is a leading authority on the threats to groundwater from contamination and the creator of the academic field contaminant hydrogeology, which studies the leaching of chemicals and waste. A geological engineer by training, he pioneered highly collaborative field experiments and new systematic approaches to monitor, control and clean up contaminated groundwater. This provided keen insights into contaminant transport processes and made it easier to protect groundwater, the source of drinking water for nearly half the global population.
On receiving news of the prize, Dr Cherry said: "I'm very pleased to receive the Stockholm Water Prize and to get this opportunity to speak about the importance of protecting groundwater. Though the global water crisis is starting to get more attention, groundwater is often forgotten, despite making up 99 per cent of the planet's liquid freshwater. Many people still perceive it as pristine when in fact it is threatened by human activity."
In its citation, the Stockholm Water Prize Nominating Committee said: "With the Stockholm Water Prize, John Cherry is recognized for his contributions to science, education, practice and for translating his well-earned stature into a passionate and highly effective advocacy for groundwater science to inform current and future policies, laws and collective deliberations that governments must establish to protect water, our most essential and yet most imperilled resource."
SIWI's Executive Director Torgny Holmgren comments: "Dr Cherry has made invaluable contributions to help us understand how we can protect the world's threatened groundwater."
Dr Cherry is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Guelph, Canada, Director at the University's Consortium for Field-Focused Groundwater Research and Associate Director of the G360 Institute for Groundwater Research.
The prize is awarded by SIWI in cooperation with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and will be presented by H.R.H Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, at a Royal Award Ceremony on 26 August, during World Water Week in Stockholm.
